Drop a Cliff

September 29th, 2007

Probably will be the most scariest thing you will ever do in your life. This is nothing like jumping off a big rock on a large mountain.. we are talking about a sheer drop. Here is a check list you can refer to but again always check your ego before you do this and never attempt to do it alone or just with a buddy, have a large group of friends with you and at the bottom, work your way up, dont go jumping off mount everest :)

Check 1 - Check Your Ego - you know what this means. Just because joey has a big ego and says you should jump.. that means you should do it.. no of course not.. Start off with a five to ten footer and keep going at it until your comfortable, landing correctly and then work up from there

Check 2 - Check Your Line - Cliffs have large pointey rocks sticking out even where you think your going to land, be sure to go check out where youare going to land. Now most of the times you do drops on powder days, and these rocks will be hidden, so its important to check your line. Most of the Uber Gnar cliffs that you see in dvds when pro snowboarders drop have been really looked over. The riders know where to land, they know if anything needs to be cleared like ledges and branches, trees and boulders. You should do that same even with your little 2 footer rock. Another thing you can do is ask a local shop where is the best place and has anyone else been there that day

Check 3 - Check Your Adrenaline - Jonaven Moore said " Finding the right cliff is all about finding the right landing. Make sure its steep enough i.e flat landing knee to face, start small and learn how to judge how much speed you need to get over a small cliff. You really need to know that, make sure your not going to fast. Your better off to go slow and ollie off the take off if you bomb it you might overshoot your landing and end up crumbling in the flats"

Check 4 Check Your Claim - Back checking is not okay. Dont think because you didnt die you stuck it besides being really bad steez, its practical : If there is something sharp and painful under the snow you want it to hit your board not you right? Spotting your landing as you come off the cliff shoud help keep you focused and your board centered under you. You want to be like a cat and land as light on your feet as possible with your weight distributed a little to the back so you don’t nose dive in the powder, but not so far that you slip out on impact. Jonaven said " If you dont think you can ride away clean without putting your ass, back or side down then you shouldnt do it
