12 Questions You Don’t Want To Be Heard Asking

September 26th, 2007

You want to ask them but maybe you have held back. So here they are 12 questions you were afraid to ask.

Q: Is Snowboarding safer than skiing?
A: Well a survey was done on this and it seems that skiing is safer but not by a far stretch. Every 1,000 days apparently 1 snowboarder will have an injury, which really isn’t much unless of course its you who has the accident. Snowboarders are twice as likely to snap a bone vs a skier, yet the upside is knee injuries are less

Q. How much should i spend on a snowboard setup?
A. Ok high price doesn’t mean its better. Sure buying boots, board, bindings will have you somewhere in the $1,000 range you can get an entire kit for under $600, as there are lots of good boards for $300.. but saying that if you have a tight budget, spend it on the boots.. to learn more about the importance of snowboard boots reader our article

Q. How often should I wax my snowboard?
A. Look everyone is different but look at doing it every two to three times that you go snowboarding. Another time you may want to do it is if there has been any major temperature changes since you last went out on the snow. Another is if you havent been for at least a month and lastly if you have put your base through one heck of a session.

Q. What are the most common snowboard injuries?
A. One of the biggies is " The Wrists " you need to protect them by wearing some wrist guards. A study was done and about 95,000 snowboarders every year fracture their wrists. When it comes to actual bone breaks it’s likely to be a leg unless of course you go off some steep cliff.. ( avoid that ) So if your new take those lessons its important.

Q. Do I need a Helmet?
A
- That is like asking do I need life insurace? Studies have been done and up to 60% of an injury can be reduced just by wearing a helmet. Don’t think you will look like a nerd even pros like Chris Dufficy wears them.

Q. What’s the Fall Line?
A
- It’s the steepest part down the hill, so imagine in your mind the route a ball would take if you let it go, going down the speedline is a great way to get speed. Now if you want to slowdown then you get your board sideways to the fall line

Q. Who has the right of way, snowboarders or skiers?
A. Neither one does, it’s not about what your on it is about the mountain and the person in front of you at the time your coming down, that could be someone walking or even a tree lol . Keep your eyes peeled

Q.How do I avoid Goggle Tan?
A.- Don’t wear goggles :) No seriously, it is a good question as damn you could lose your job over it. Best way is to apply lots of Sunscreen with a rating of about 15 every few hours. You might think Goggles is a good idea but actually you can get your eyes burnt that way too.

Q. What’s the difference between Freestyle and freeride?
A. Nowdays riders do both, but to be more specific any type of trick like 360s, street rails, or such is considered freestyle and freeriding is when your hitting things like trees or groomers, or posts this is also called All Mountain Riding.

Q. How long should my board be?
A. It varies from person to person on what people recommend. But it should be somewhere between where your shoulders and forehead er high. Long boards provide stability, while short ones are so easy to move around on. Experienced riders will usually go for longer boards. Board length really is preference, try out a few different sizes and find the one you are comfortable with. Width is important as well and so is stiffness.

Q. Do I really need to warm - up or stretch?
A- Well if your cold I would say yes, your going to be moving your body around alot, it really does a number on your muscles and bones so yep make sure you do a few stretches and warm up ex cerises before you hit the slopes you don’t want to end up tearing a muscle.

Q.Tune, Detune, What’s the difference?
A. Ok when you sharpen the edges along the length of your board that is considered tuning it up, this is highly important when your on top of ice or hard snow, it helps you turn. Detuning is when you dull the tip and tail edges of your board, this normally occurs when you first buy a board. Detuning is helpful for making sure you dont catch a turn to early and land on your ass, it also is great for rail riding and less twitchy on the flat areas.
